The Renault 5 E-Tech and Alpine A290 have plenty of character straight from the factory. The right suspension upgrade can bring a more purposeful stance and a setup that better suits your driving. But should you choose lowering springs or invest in adjustable coilovers? And where do wheel spacers fit into the plan?
At RTECSHOP, we can help you compare a sensible road-focused spring upgrade with a more adjustable suspension package. The aim is a car that works on the roads you actually drive, with the right balance of appearance, control and everyday usability.
Lowering springs replace the original springs and provide a specified reduction in ride height. With an approved spring-and-damper combination, you retain the existing dampers. They are usually the more accessible starting point if you want less arch gap and a sportier stance without needing to adjust the height yourself.
A coilover suspension kit replaces the springs and dampers as a matched package and adds ride-height adjustment within the kit's specified range. Adjustment features vary between kits. The KW V3 options listed for these cars also offer separate rebound and compression damping adjustment, giving more scope to tailor the setup.
| Your priority | Lowering springs | KW V3 coilovers |
|---|---|---|
| A defined, fixed drop | A straightforward option | Height adjustable within the approved range |
| Damper adjustment | Retains the existing damper's features | Separate rebound and compression adjustment |
| Budget and setup | Usually lower initial cost | Higher investment and more setup choices |
| Everyday comfort | Depends on the kit, dampers and tyres | Depends on the height, damping and tyres |
Our Renault 5 E-Tech suspension and spacers range includes Eibach and H&R lowering springs, plus KW V3 coilovers.

The A290 needs its own application-specific parts. Do not assume that a kit for the Renault 5 will fit simply because the cars are related. Browse our Alpine A290 suspension and spacers range to compare the current listings.
Lowering figures are approximate and application-dependent. Final ride height varies with vehicle specification, original suspension and equipment. Part numbers above are a comparison guide; suitability must be checked against your vehicle.

A sportier setup does not have to mean choosing the lowest possible ride height. Spring rate, available suspension travel, damper condition, wheel size and tyre sidewall all influence how a car feels. Lowering can change the ride, and retaining exactly the original comfort should never be assumed.
For commuting and weekend drives, start with your normal routes: speed humps, rough surfaces, steep driveways and passengers all matter. If you want coilovers, explain what you would like to change about the car's behaviour. A carefully chosen height and sensible damping setup are more useful than turning every adjuster to its firmest setting.
Spacers move a wheel outwards; they do not lower the suspension. They can be considered alongside a suspension change when assessing stance and wheel clearance, but they are not automatically required with lowering springs or coilovers.
We supply both Eibach and H&R spacers in 5mm and 7mm sizes for these applications. Both brands now have online listings. Our H&R listings offer silver or black finishes in the same product dropdown: 5mm for the front and 7mm for the rear, supplied as pairs. Longer bolts are required and sold separately. Confirm wheel clearance and retained hub engagement before ordering.
Spacer thickness is per wheel: 5mm each side adds 10mm across an axle; 7mm each side adds 14mm. Our Eibach listings include a 5mm front and 7mm rear arrangement for OEM wheels, with application-specific notes. This is not a universal recommendation for every wheel setup, and the same thickness does not make different spacer systems or bolts interchangeable.
We need to check wheel width and offset, hub engagement, brake and arch clearance, and the correct bolt length and seat type. Aftermarket wheels can change the answer. Tell us your wheel specification and planned suspension setup so we can discuss suitable Eibach or H&R options.
Shop H&R spacers for the Renault 5 front and Renault 5 rear, or the Alpine A290 front and Alpine A290 rear.
For a subtle daily-driver upgrade: start by comparing the model-specific Eibach and H&R spring options, along with Cobra where listed for the A290. Discuss the intended drop and your comfort priorities before deciding.
For more control over the setup: consider the model-specific KW V3 kit if adjustable height and damping are features you will use. Track-day plans are worth discussing, but no spring or coilover kit guarantees more grip or a faster lap time on its own.
